Adam Pendleton (b.1984) is an American conceptual artist that works in performance, video, collage and silkscreen that investigate political histories, historical representations, and social movements. Much of Pendleton’s work is language-based to center on historical narratives and re-contextualize their meanings. He explains: “I often use language in my works. And the historical context was that someone who was being systematically oppressed in American society actually had a deeper belief in the American democratic project, and was arguing that it could in fact be a more open and just place.” Pendleton’s “Black Dada,” his best-known work, is a silkscreen series that take inspiration from Amiri Baraka’s poem “Black Dada Nihilismus” and the post-World War II movement that was a response to the horrifying absurdity of the war.
