Open Sessions Artist 2018-20: Esteban Cabeza de Baca when did you decide to become an artist, and why? . “For me it wasn't a choice but the only way I could express myself growing up. I didn't start speaking until I was five years old so drawing and painting were outlets for me. My parents took me to a speech therapist and on the first visit got me to start speaking. I think back about growing up along the border and being in such an intense political household and all that I saw. Drawing and painting was my voice in this intense but nurturing environment.
