Anna Maria Maiolino (b. 1942), a Brazilian-Italian artist, has a varied ouvre that includes works on paper, photography, sculpture, and video that are largely autobiographical and reflect her experiences as an immigrant, mother, and citizen. Escaping fascist Italy as a child, Maiolino and her family moved to Venezuela and then to Brazil, which became her primary country of residence. During the 1960s and 70s, Maiolino became involved in Brazil’s New Figuration art movement, which were representational works that were acts of resistance against the national military regime and urban inequalities. Maiolino’s woodcuts of this period are bold works on paper that have small, sometimes incoherent text elements.
