Open Sessions Artist 2018-20: Joeun Aatchim when did you decide to become an artist, and why? . “When I began to draw and write, my mother suggested we share a secret notebook in which I would write or draw things that I could not express otherwise. I placed the notebook in a secret location only the two of us knew about. My mother would find the notebook and respond to me in the form of a poem or her thoughts. This cycle continued until I started elementary school. Checking if the notebook had been taken out gave me real joy; it felt sacred—being allowed to express myself and receiving unforeseen responses was thrilling.
