Peter Doig (b. 1959, Edinburgh) is a figurative painter whose narrative works draw upon found photographs, movie scenes, album covers, and the famous paintings of Edvard Munch and Gustav Klimt. At the start of his career, Doig’s paintings were casted off as being outdated due to their traditional method of figuration. However, his art had a mystical and dreamlike quality that singularized his paintings among his contemporaries and earned him the prestigious Whitechapel Art Prize in 1991.
