At the Queens Museum, “Mel Chin: All Over the Place”, presents a multi-location exhibition with manifestations of the work of Mel Chin co-produced by the Queens Museum and No Longer Empty. The exhibition spans nearly four decades of Chin’s malleable and wide-ranging approach to artistic practice. . These haunting portraits presented in “straight-jacket” frames portray three seemingly unrelated individuals: a notoriously abusive CEO (Al “Chainsaw” Dunlap), a murderer killed by lethal injection (William Garner), and a composer (Ludwig Van Beethoven). What these men have in common is suspected lead poisoning which may have led to the violent and erratic behavior all three displayed. The works are drawn with a lead point in which a metal stylus is dragged across a prepared surface. Areas of metal point drawings will shift in tone and color as the oxidization process occurs.
