JM: “For me, drawings represent a greater degree of abstraction and dematerialization than sculptures, paintings, or music. Drawing simplifies form, reducing it to lines and shapes and frees the viewer to fill in the details, the physicality, or even the context for themselves.” 〰️
SM: “Rather than building a heavy object, I’m always fascinated by the idea of using the little to represent the big, using emptiness to reflect presence. So when I draw, I use as few words as I can.” 〰️
James Mercer lives and works in Brooklyn. His work has been shown at The Tomato House, Brooklyn; The Stairwell Gallery, Providence; and Terrault Contemporary, Baltimore. 〰️
