Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. 〰 Nancy Spero (1926-2009) was an American visual artist known for fearlessly engaging with political, social, and cultural subjects like war, state violence, and female oppression. Spero, and her artist-husband Leon Golub moved to New York during the protests against the Vietnam War. Her well-known “War Series” (1966-1970) are small gouache and ink works on paper with quick, but expressive brushwork. “That whole body of work was, in a way, my personal manifesto, made in a hurry, against the war in Vietnam,” Spero explains. “I was feeling upset as an artist who had no voice, and at the same time, I did was thinking of the horrible symbiotic relationship between the oppressor and the victim.” After the war, Spero continued to give voice to those silenced by focusing specifically on women.
