Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. Terry Winters (b. 1949) is an American artist whose drawings, paintings and prints take inspiration from intricate systems or patterns that exist in ecology and mathematics. In his early work, Winters depicted organic shapes like plants, seeds, and “morulas,” which are clumps of reproductive cells. Often using scientific books as references, Winters depicts these biological forms in a representational manner; however, the subject being depicted is not always obvious. “The goal is to construct a picture that is autonomous and at the same time suggests multiple associations or readings,” Winters explains. “This is partly why I’m reluctant to name where all the sources are, what they are. I think there is some significance to the source, of course, but the ultimate significance is what the images conjure up in the paintings themselves and what they might mean to the viewer...
