#DrawingPapers Archive
This page from Drawing Papers 76 features “Sphere and Pedestal”, a collage on cardboard created by
#SterlingRuby in 2007.
The 2008 exhibition, Sterling Ruby: CHRON, examined the role of drawing as medium, gesture, and act, in the LA- based artist’s multivalent body of work- from graffiti-based spray paint drawings to photographic collages, nail polish abstractions, and inscribed Formica sculptures- which when viewed together revealed formal and thematic connections informed by the artist’s background in drawing. Through using his visceral, cryptic and architectonic motifs, Ruby trades medium-specificity for an exploration of shifting borders of social and subjective experience that propose a self-styled “amorphous law.” The Drawing Papers are a series of publications documenting The Drawing Center’s exhibitions and public programs and providing a forum for the study of drawing. -Kate Robinson, Bookstore Manager
