Every Thursday, we share a favorite book about drawing and artists working in the medium. 〰
“Drawing offers artists freedom, as an under-regarded and under-theorized backwater, to explore hitherto overlooked or repressed aspects of creativity” - Emma Dexter 〰
“Vitamin D: New Perspectives in Drawing” is the first volume by Phaidon created for the medium of drawing as collection of the current state of affairs within the medium. The collection features 109 emerging international artists such as Kara Walker, Ernesto Caivano, Tacita Dean and Yoshitomo Nara, with each artist allotted multiple pages and a paired text about their artistry. As suggested in its title, Vitamin D offers up a contemporary interpretation of drawing by tracing its historical importance and watching it mature independently from painting and sculpture. The artworks highlight the innovation and energy of contemporary drawing, and proves the importance of the often underrepresented and undervalued medium. 〰
