Wangechi Mutu, born in 1972 in Nairobi and currently based in New York, explores female identity and women’s role throughout history, focusing particularly on black women, through her allegorical collages. Using images from a wide-range sources including pornography, fashion magazines, medical and anthropological publications, Mutu employs historical and contemporary references to examine societal representations of the female body. “Females carry the marks, language and nuances of their culture more than the male,” Mutu explains. “Anything that is desired or despised is always placed on the female body.” Mounting the sampled images of women on paper or mylar, Mutu combines the appropriated pictures with ink, paint and other materials to create pieced together figures that are frightening, but hold a formidable sense of beauty.
