Every Thursday, we share a favorite book about drawing and artists working in the medium. 〰〰 “I like drawing...without making a drawing” - Lee Bontecou Best known for her sculptures in the 1960s, Lee Bontecou’s “Recent Work: Sculpture and Drawing,” an exhibit at FreedmanArt in fall 2011, was a continuation of an already expansive career. The show was comprised of hanging mobiles, drawings on paper, and a new conceptual form referred to as sandboxes, which were physical sandboxes filled with varied small objects and sculptures. These sandboxes acted as a study in composition, opening up small microcosms of imagined landscapes. Regarding this exhibit, Bontecou talked about being a child attuned to both drawing and sculpting with clay, an interplay that resonated in her artworks throughout her whole career.
