The man behind the camera, Richard Avedon, remains a legend in the fashion and portrait photography world. Born in New York City in 1923, Richard Avedon made a name for himself in fashion and photography, as well as in the New York social scene. While the artist is perhaps best known for his portraits of female icons like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, Avedon also spent a period of time photographing people around the American Midwest by driving around asking to take pictures. Avedon focused on the photographer’s role in a portrait; he questioned and challenged the idea of authenticity and candidness. Particularly when photographing strangers, he recognized that the portrayal of his subjects was more his own creation than a representation of their true character. “All photographs are accurate.
