In our Drawing Room gallery we are screening the "Archival Films of the Department of Tropical Research", c. 1927–1934. Courtesy of the Wildlife Conservation Society Archives. An early example of underwater cinematography, the scenes of coral reefs on view in this film were likely shot in 1927 off the northern coast of Haiti by cinematographer Floyd Crosby, who went on to film High Noon (1952) and other Hollywood productions. Other footage shown here was taken during the DTR’s Bermuda Bathysphere expeditions (1929–1934).
