"Exploratory Works: Drawings from the Department of Tropical Research Field Expeditions" explores an early 20th-century moment when artists and illustrators advanced the work of scientists in the development of current ideas of ecology and conservation. We will discuss the unique techniques of these artists drawing in jungle and marine environments without the use of color photography. As we consider the timeline and geographic locations of these explorations we may also ask ourselves; Who were these naturalists and explorers? Who funded them and why? What was gained and lost?
