Kimsooja’s textile, performance, and installation works create meaning through repetition, building on a number of favored forms from traditional Korean textiles to the artist's own body. Born in Taegu, Korea, in 1957, Kimsooja earned both a BFA and MFA from Hong-Ik University in Seoul. In each minimal, deeply human work, she cultivates an ever growing series of images and associations using her body, voice, and image. By using the image of the “bottari”—a bundled cloths used for carrying belongings— Kimsooja engages with structures of place and identity. Each of Kimsooja’s highly patterned and colored bottari, handsewn, laid out, or used to encapsulate the few belongings of an unidentified carrier, reference different bodily, geographic, and even planetary states.
