For #MuseumInstaSwap 2017 The Drawing Center is giving you an inside look at our neighbor the New Museum newmuseum. The New Museum is opening a new exhibition of #CarolRama works today. An Italian artist whose bodily, grotesque work spanned the 20th century, Rama created paintings, drawings, and objects that fluctuate between erotic, eerie, and eccentric. Born in Turin, Italy in 1918, she delved into issues of gender, representation, desire, and repression with her watercolors and multimedia works. Balancing a playful, childlike quality with intensity of content— writhing forms, contagion, and bodies empty of their organs abound, while bicycle tires occasionally stand in for the texture of human skin— Rama established a body of work that continues to inspire well after her death in 2015.
