Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. Originally a photographer, Rashid Johnson branched out into sculpture and figurative painting, particularly with his black soap images, fairly recently. In late 2015 he showed a sampling of this newer work at The Drawing Center, in a show entitled “Rashid Johnson: Anxious Men”. Each of these images, formed by scraping into and pulling up the soap ground once it has been splashed and laid on the tile base, reductively manifests as a stylized, grimacing face. Johnson was born in Chicago in 1977. His mother, Dr. Cheryl Johnson-Odim, attained her doctorate from Northwestern, while his father was an artist and worked in electronics.
