Marcel Dzama’s work ranges from whimsical to grotesque, blending painting, drawing, sculpture, and film in works that range from intimate watercolors to fullscale productions. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1974, Dzama earned his B.F.A. from the University of Manitoba. In collaboration with other illustrative artists, he founded the Royal Arts Lodge, with whom he showed work at The Drawing Center in 2003. Sprinkled with references to Dada and Duchamp from the use of chess pieces to collage, Dzama has developed a practice reliant on hazy, perplexing narratives. He is known for breaking up his own muted color palette with shocking splashed or red and royal blue.
