On Kawara’s artistic career was one of daily documentation and experience. Born in 1932 in Kariya, Japan, Kawara spent much of his life as a resident in New York City and traveling worldwide. From 1966 onward Kawara documented time and place in his Today series. The paintings include only the day’s date written in white text with the grammar and vocabulary particular to Kawara’s location at that time. Works like the 3,000 or so pieces in the “Today” series, along with similar engagements with newspaper clippings, maps, and telegrams earned Kawara a place among the founding members of conceptual art.
