A well known figure in Paris at the end of the 19th century, Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec Monfa, known as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, interpreted his world with a post impressionist attention to color and contour. Born in Albi, France in 1864, Toulouse-Lautrec famously used his skills in painting, drawing, and printmaking to capture Paris nightlife and its stars at the likes of the Moulin Rouge. His work balanced fluidity with graphic forms befitting his experience in the world of 1890’s advertisement. Even when painting, Toulouse-Lautrec maintained an illustrative quality in his work. He blended his extensive education in painting with the sketches and caricatures of his youth in portraits and posters that confidently captured dancers, brothels, and his contemporaries, all with the aid of his signature saturated colors and the expert use of bare canvas.
