My first time visiting the American brunch spot Freemans, I was surprised when my friend ducked into an alley rather than continuing towards Bowery. When I reached the end of the poster-plastered corridor, it became clear we were heading towards a multi-story restaurant draped with floating lights and greenery. Every trip to Freemans since, I take someone new, telling them vaguely and somewhat ominously that we’re going for “brunch in an alley.” Fortunately, I‘ve never had to wait long, thanks to the large space and hidden location. The wholesome salads, generous breakfast platters, and bright sandwiches are reliably fresh and comforting, and it’s tempting to have a taste of everything.
