Born in Detroit in 1955 and active as an artist since the 1970s, Amy Sillman has transformed everything from painting to zines to animation to iPhone apps into tools for her creative exploration. The true constant in her work is the way she encourages every medium she uses to move and change. Raw emotion and sharp humor underpin her feminist take on abstraction which she imbues with an awkward intensity in both color and gesture. In still and animated work, Sillman often introduces linguistic and auditory elements that further define her hapless figures and that raise intimate philosophical questions.
