Throwback Thursday! In March 2014 we hosted “Andrea Bowers and Suzanne Lacy: Drawing Lessons”, a nine-day installation at The Drawing Center. Artist Suzanne Lacy believed it was time for her to learn how to draw properly and Andrea Bowers decided it was her duty to rectify her colleague’s artistic formation. Bowers and Lacy used these drawing lessons, and the dynamic of teacher and student, as a platform for conversation. As Bowers and Lacy worked under the scrutiny of the audience, they explored issues that arise in their artistic practice such as the roles and problematics of representation in public practice art, or the roles of the venue, object, and style in the identification and evaluation of art. This was an intensive and actual attempt to teach Lacy to draw, and so the full lessons and practice time lasted for a total of six hours per day.
