A Page from the
#DrawingPapers Archive
This page from Drawing Papers 24 features “Eurydice No.38”, a drawing of mixed media with oil on paper created by
#BrachaLichtenbergEttinger between 1999 and 2001.
The 2001 exhibit was the first U.S. solo exhibition of drawings by Israeli artist and psychoanalyst Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger. Ettinger’s enigmatic drawings were drawn from her ongoing Eurydice series, in which she addressed issues of exile, memory, human relationships, and history through layered images of photocopied archival photographs and screen-like veils of ink. Since 1994, Ettinger made over thirty works in the series, creating barely discernible figures and faces by running images through a photocopy machine that she stopped midway through the printing process, taking the residual, dusty ink of the copy and mixing it with purple and reddish streaks of oil paint. The textured images, often old photographs, give the impression of a past that haunts the present.
