Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. Blending textile, painting, sculpture, photography, and film, British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE explores colonial and post-colonial concepts through his interactions with material and recreation. Born in 1962 in London, and raised in Nigeria, Shonibare honed his skills with an MFA from Goldsmiths College. Focusing on dutch wax printed cotton textiles, Shonibare externalizes and examines the layered history of race, colonialism, industry, interpretation, and appropriation inherent in the material. Along with a team of studio assistants, Shonibare brings to light questions of authenticity and history, creating vibrant two and three dimensional works with pattern, wax and paint. #YinkaShonibareMBE #YinkaShonibare Image: Yinka Shonibare MBE in his studio.
