Known for his massive sculptural works, Anish Kapoor creates two and three dimensional pieces that reference space, light, and architecture. Born in Mumbai in 1954, Kapoor began his artistic education in England in 1973, and now lives and works in London. His early works, piles of what appear to be compacted and sculpted pigment rising from the ground, but are really geometric wooden or stone structures gessoed and covered with powder, launched Kapoor into his exploration of metaphysical forms. He is known for creating pieces that warp the world around them or appear as voids in space. With pigment, reflective materials, and even substances that absorb light completely, Kapoor plays with dimensionality, flattening, creating depth, or else twisting space completely.
