Throwback Thursday! In the fall of 2014, we opened Xanti Schawinsky: Head Drawings and Faces of War, a look at the prolific oeuvre by the first generation Bauhaus artist. Schawinsky’s highly original work covers a whole domain of genres and media, a characteristic of the interdisciplinary approach of the Bauhaus style, the famous German art school that deeply influenced modernism in the first half of 20th century. His practice spans from paintings to drawings, from experimental photography to stage design, jazz music and graphic design. The exhibit overviewed the range of social and political investigations present in Schawinsky’s trajectory and focused on two bodies of work made between 1941 and 1946. The first one, the series Faces of War, consisted of works on paper made with mixed media, watercolor and ink, depicting man-machine hybrids.
