Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. Wangechi Mutu (b.1972) explores identity through reconstitution of the world. Using a collage based approach to create images that teem with symbolic references, the Kenyan-born, Brooklyn-based artist raises questions of globalization, colonialism, and gender. With found imagery culled from fashion and natural science publications, textbooks, and erotic magazines, Mutu reshapes figures into composites of the concepts she explores. Her vibrant drawings direct each image, forming surreal figures who often emerge from the cacophony of source material as complexly composed women. In drawing, collage, sculpture, or video, Mutu’s fantastical subjects resist definition.
