Associated with the flourishing Paris art world of the 1910s and 1920s, Joan Miró created countless drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures, and prints before his death in 1983. Born in Barcelona in 1893, Miró moved seamlessly in his work from fauvism to cubism to surrealism and the spaces in between, experimenting with the movements flourishing around him to create vibrant, instantly recognizable images. His work ranged from early experiments in still life to sparse paintings, lithographs, and etchings characterized by descriptive lines, solid blocks of color, and often amorphous subjects. Miró, like his fellow surrealists, experimented with automatism and dreams as inspiration for work, and established a reputation for childlike abstraction alongside carefully implemented symbolism.
