Using stylish and even surreal imagery, Shirin Neshat focuses on personal themes, which transform into political works when brought into conversation with culture and history. Born in Qavzin, Iran in 1957, and based in New York since exile during the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Shirin Neshat works through the varied ways people construct her identity as an Iranian woman in Iran and in the West. In her films, elegant black and white photography, and ink interventions on photographic prints, Neshat explores feminism, politics, religion, and violence, especially as they relate to Iranian women globally. With arabic script elegantly scrawled over faces or films that highlight historical events with magical realist imagery, Neshat traces political and ideological shifts.
