Throwback Thursday! In 2013, we exhibited “Alexis Rockman: Drawings from Life of Pi”, a show featuring the watercolor drawings made in preparation for the 2012 Academy Award-winning feature film directed by Ang Lee. During pre-production, Lee sought out to Rockman’s vision as an artist with a specific commitment to hand drawing to bring a human scale to the project. The exhibition explored the relationship between visual art –specifically drawing- and commercial filmmaking. Though most artistic contributions to the production of feature films involve photo-realistic drawings or cartoon-like illustrations, Rockman’s images are fluid, intimate, and dynamic, reflecting a darkly surreal vision of the collision between human civilization and the natural world.
