Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) was a German artist who developed a diverse body of work in performance art, installation, sculpture, graphic design, and drawing. Considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Beuys was known for his passionate and open debates on a wide range of political, social, cultural, and environmental topics. His work was grounded in concepts of humanism and on the idea that art originates from personal experience yet it inherently has universal value. Throughout the 1970s, Beuys developed the role of the artist as a pedagogue, delivering lectures and talks in galleries and colleges using complex annotated drawings on chalkboards. #JosephBeuys Image: Joseph Beuys, “Directional Forces’, 1977
