A Page from the #DrawingPapers Archive This page from “Drawing Papers 8 features Very well saint #2”, drawn with pencil, silk thread, wooden ice cream spoon, and wool felt, on Japanese paper by Cyrilla Mozenter in 1999. The 2000 exhibition “#CyrillaMozenter: Very well saint” consisted of a series of drawings, the title of which was adapted from the phrase “very well saints,” which was used by Gertrude Stein in her libretto for Virgil Thompson’s opera Four Saints in Three Acts. With an inspired sense of play that can be likened to Stein’s inventive use of language, Mozenter’s drawings reflect a singsong pattern of interrelated visual references. Mozenter writes of her work, “Each drawing is made with two 12 ¼ x 17 1/8 inch sheets of Okawara handmade paper, layers and sewn together at the top edge.
