The 2000 exhibition “[Together now]” featured an installation in which Hess paired two unlikely materials–charcoal drawings and adhesive tape. Tape-based images slot themselves alongside charcoal ones forming a jumbled assemblage causing the images either flow into each other or jostle for momentary attention. Hess is partial to incorporating widely recognized cultural icons. The thematic presence of sports and animals is prominent among his works, as well as common objects, such as steam irons. These images offer the comfort of the familiar and are instantly readable. In Hess’s installations, the graphic clarity of the tape allows the logos to retain a connection to their day-to-day existence, but the drawn elements rendered in charcoal and, seen close up, the pieced-together aesthetic of the tape itself, provide room for play.
