Throwback Thursday!
Three years ago in 2013, as part of our Performance Series, we hosted the world premiere of NOTATIONNOTATIONS, the first collaboration between German multimedia artist Susan Hefuna and Italian contemporary choreographer Luca Veggetti. Staged over three nights, the event proposed the idea that if a line is the trace of a point in motion, then the human body moving through space is also a drawing.
Both artists place drawing as the foundation for their practice, especially Hefuna who is known for her grid drawings commenting on Middle Eastern culture. This 2-year project started shortly after our Executive Director, Brett Littman, introduced them to each other in 2011. The concept was that Hefuna would prepare large chalk drawings on the main gallery floor and then dancers, moving along choreography by Veggeti, would gradually erase the drawn surface through their repetitive, physical gestures. The drawing would transition through the movement and become immaterial.
