Spero pushed past barriers faced by female artists in the male-dominated art world of the 1950s and 60s to become one of the most influential feminist artists of our time. Motivated by the injustices she saw in the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement, Spero created raw works on upsetting, often violent subject matters that criticized the current political and social state of the United States. As a feminist leader, Spero helped pave the way for female artists through her work with the Women Artists in Revolution (WAR) group and her help founding the first women’s co-op gallery, Artists in Residence (A.I.R) in New York City. #NancySpero Image: Nancy Spero in her studio, Paris, 1962.
