John Cage was a leading composer associated with the postwar avant-garde in America. Though best known for his experimental compositions, Cage was also a poet, a chess master, a writer, a mycologist (mushroom collector), and a visual artist who created graphic music scores and worked with drawing and print media. Like his conceptual performances, Cage often created his drawings through chance operations that brought the viewers’ attention to the artist’s process.
