In the Spring of 2001, #TheDrawingCenter exhibited Rosemarie Trockel: Metamorphoses and Mutations which was the first New York museum exhibition of the drawings of the contemporary German artist #RosemarieTrockel. One of the most important contemporary German artists of her generation, Trockel is known for an eclectic art practice that interweaves drawing, video, painting, sculpture, and installation. She addressed issues of sexuality, feminism, and the human body, and also questioned the hierarchy of systems: political, social, and even aesthetics. The exhibition of her drawings was organized according to themes at the heart of Trockel's work: metamorphosis and mutation. For the artist, things are never solely what they seem: ambivalence, inversions, and double meanings are constantly present in her practice.
