Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. “a flat surface with paint on it- nothing more” The minimalist artist created flat surfaces using black house paint leaving unpainted stripes to make repetitive patterns. Between 1958 to 1960, the “Black Paintings” brought immediate recognition for the 23 year old Frank Stella. His flat surfaces in combination with the monochromatic palette avoided representation of any sorts and hence stated his position towards painting as an object in itself. Despite their clean geometric, arranged patterns and forms, these paintings consist of slight irregularities due to the freehand style in which the paint was applied. Sidenote: Frank Stella’s Retrospective at whitneymuseum will be on view until February 7, 2016 #ArtistInAction #FrankStella #BlackPaintings
