Today, Ada, our Family Art Workshop Instructor, explored the work in "Rashid Johnson: Anxious Men" by considering personal history, selfhood, and identity formation in Rashid Johnson's site specific installation and series of visceral black-soap and wax-on-tile portraits, Anxious Men. In Johnson's immersive environment, we investigated his use of found archival objects, abstraction, and figuration, and urgent questions arising around race and political identity in America today. The families wrote poems, short texts, and used lyrics of songs juxtaposed with making drawings of themselves. Offered on Select Saturdays, Family Art Workshops at The Drawing Center are designed to encourage observation, discussion, and the opportunity to explore art together in the intimate setting of our galleries.
