It is #ThrowbackThursday! In May 2001, The Drawing Center presented performance drawings by the artist Alison Knowles. As a founding member of the avant-garde group Fluxus, Knowles creates work using a variety of media including papermaking, printmaking, performance, and sound. Knowles's performance work incorporates visual, aural, and tactile elements. Knowles began using beans in 1962 to create artist books, sound producing sculptures, and handmade paper. When Alison Knowles upended one of her large “Bean Turners”–which consisted of beans enclosed in earth-toned handmade paper–she created a pummeling cascade of sound. They took on a life of their own; any shift, brought on by a change of light or humidity, and they let loose a small pattering. Knowles wove together these sonic events with spoken poetry during her performances.
