A Page from the Drawing Papers Archive This page from Drawing Papers 14 features Grande tache gris, an Indian ink on paper drawing created by Henri Michaux from 1955-56. The 2000 exhibition Untitled Passages by Henri Michaux investigated Michaux’s graphic works in tandem with his poetic practice, addressing the artist-poet’s research into the passages between “writing” and “drawing.” The exhibition took its title from Michaux’s extensive body of untitled drawings and from Passages , his book of poetic writings. Michaux wrote, “Once the paper has been murked up, faces emerge from it without knowing what they are doing there and without my knowing either. They have expressed themselves well in advance of me, rendering an impression which I do not recognize and which I will never know if it has previously passed through me.
