Our Communications Director Molly Gross was visiting Chicago’s amazing MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) found this striking work by Rashid Johnson in their current exhibit, The “Freedom Principle: Experiments in Art and Music, 1965 to Now”. The exhibit links the vibrant legacy of the 1960s African American avant-garde to current art and culture. It is occasioned in part by the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a still-flourishing organization of Chicago musicians whose interdiscliplinary explorations expanded the boundaries of jazz. Rashid Johnson’s “Roscoe’s Target” (detail, see full piece in last post), 2014 is, in part, a tribute to AACM member Roscoe Mitchell. In the work’s center is a copy of the album “Sound”, recorded by the Roscoe Mitchell Sextet in 1966. ~~~~~ This October Johnson will be taking over The Drawing Center’s Drawing Room with his upcoming exhibition “Rashid Johnson: Anxious Men”, Oct 2-Dec 20.
