So, what I tried to do was reverse that historical process and use where I am to influence the work—to ground it.”-Sean Scully In 2013, The Drawing Center curated an intensely focused survey comprising of Sean Scully’s (b. 1945, Dublin, Ireland) acrylic, ink, graphite, and masking-tape drawings from 1974–75. The exhibition, “Sean Scully: Change and Horizontals”, presented these works together for the first time in over 30 years alongside two large-scale paintings from the same period and one of the artist’s personal notebooks. Viewed together, the works charted an evolution of composition and gesture that provided unique insight into this artist’s singular aesthetic.
