For his 2000 exhibition," Mark Manders: Room with Several Night Drawings and One Reduced Night Scene", Manders created a new installation as part of his series "Self-Portrait as a Building", a work in progress the artist had been developing since 1986 that explored a partially real and partially imaginary self-portrait. Manders wrote, “For me, drawing is research into thinking rather than an investigation of perception.” His installation combined works on paper with wall drawings, sculptures, and everyday objects, such as cups and ropes.
