The 2010 exhibition “Dorothea Tanning: Early Designs for the Stage” presented approximately twenty hand-drawn ballet costume designs by Dorothea Tanning created in collaboration with the early modernist choreographer, #GeorgeBalanchine. Taking the form of traditional fashion plates, the blithely rendered drawings are suggestive of bodies in motion and portrayals of outlandish characters through the quirky detailing and sensual drapery of the costumes. This drawing was created for the New York City Ballet’s Bayou- a production where the ethereal costuming and tropical setting dramatized the folkish tale of a bride and groom who depart from their wedding party to join a handsome couple enrobed in leaves and flowers- symbols of the fertile vegetation of the region and the connection of the people to the land.
