Tree, an eye of the earth, a light trap, a leafy gaze.” -#GiuseppePenone Like in his intimate language, the contemporary Italian artist Giuseppe Penoneis is intent on imprinting his body and tracing nature into his work. In 2004, The Drawing Center organized "Giuseppe Penone: The Imprint of Drawing", the first New York solo museum exhibition of Giuseppe Penone (b. 1947), who was first recognized for his work associated with Italy's Arte Povera movement in the 1960s. In the exhibition Penone imprinted and magnified his eyelids, projected them onto layers of fiber, and spread the sheets across the wall. He also traced the furrows of his forehead, transferred them onto the paper, and studded the lines with numerous acacia thorns.
