Our voting systems are dangerously outdated. With the Mayor of London elections in less than two weeks, ensuring that the ballot is free, fair and easy to participate in has never been more important. And yet, at the heart of our democracy, the one thing that struck me about the election process here in our nation’s capital when I first stood as a candidate in 2021 is how Victorian the way we vote is. To manage the election, the Electoral Commission and its regional branch, London Elects, operate a paper-based labyrinth of processes at its count venues across the city. As we approach the threshold of a technology revolution, isn’t it time we replace this risky and difficult electoral system with a new, blockchain-enabled solution?
